If you have a taste for marine life, zest for adventure and love exploring nature, then just take a good look at the career of oceanography.
It is related to the scientific study of all aspects of the ocean. However ,oceanographers do not swim with marine animals at a marine life park or snorkel in tropical waters studying coral reefs but they work in fields that use science to solve a particular problem in the ocean.

They study the motion and circulation of the ocean waters and their physical and chemical properties, and how these properties affect coastal areas, climate, and weather.
The main types of oceanographers are physical oceanographers, who look at temperature, density, saltiness, tides, currents and waves; chemical oceanographers, who investigate the chemical properties of sea water, the chemistry of living systems, behaviour of pollutants and the age of the sea water; marine biologists who study marine animals and plants; geological oceanographers who examine the rocks, minerals and processes that are at the bottom of the sea; and computer modellers who use the data collected by their colleagues to produce graphical simulations of the way the oceans flow and change around the world.

One needs a good background in geology, physics, chemistry, or biology or engineering(min. graduation degree). Proficiency in mathematics is needed definitely.
Most jobs in oceanography require trips on research vessels, so any shipboard experience is also welcome. Mechanical ability (the ability to fix equipment while on board a vessel without having to return to port) is a boon. Oher attributes that come handy are: proficiency in one or more foreign languages; certification as a scuba diver; physical stamina and tolerance to sea sickness.
